Are Africa’s state-owned oil and gas companies therefore positioned to fill the vacuum by taking on new exploration and developments more than before? A recent report by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in collaboration with the African Development Bank (AfDB) revealed that an integrated policy framework built around energy transition could generate about 26 million jobs for Africans by 2050, growing the region’s economy by 6.4 per cent by 2050. However, Africa’s investment in low-carbon energy systems is far behind that of developed nations, largely due to the continent’s financial inability. The fiscal constraints across Africa thus create a challenge for the countries to power the sustainability of the industry. In tandem with the thoughts of experts, private sector investments, public-private partnerships, and blended finance are therefore increasingly more important today, with strong public sector governance and innovative financing instruments.

The African Leadership Magazine is, therefore, putting together the Africa Energy Forum & Infrastructure Forum & Award, Accra-Ghana 2022 to bring together policymakers, private sector leaders, Industry Titans, civil society leaders, and all stakeholders on a platform to discuss ways to tackle some of the major challenges in the African energy industry, as well as connect both public and private sector actors across the entire energy value chain, to push forward with commitments and business deals that would power the sustainable future of the continent’s oil and gas industry.

As terrorism, transnational organized crime, drugs and human trafficking, failure of critical health infrastructures, and other challenges continue to impact on nations’ abilities to drive prosperity and advancements in achieving sustainable development in its economic, social and environmental dimensions, the need for strategic cooperation becomes imperative. In additional, leaders from developing nations have long given voice to standing systemic imbalances between the status of developing nations in global affairs and the rest of the more ‘developed’ especially in the areas of Defense and security cooperation, UN Security council membership, multilateral commitments towards addressing uneven impacts of climate change on the continent, among others.
